Highlander News & Events
January 31, 2012- UPDATE - Highlander at Strictly Sail in Chicago
We had Doug and Cindy Fisher’s new Highlander 2005 on a stand at the Strictly Sail show in Chicago from Thursday until Sunday. The class shared the cost of a small exhibition space with the Allen Boat Company. Thank you Tom Allen for supporting this initiative, and to Doug and Cindy for stepping up and putting a new boat in front of plenty of sailors.
We had steady traffic all weekend and the main comments that we got from visitors were (1) great looking boat , (2) I’ve never heard of them before , and (3) I used to sail them as a kid. One of the visitors was Duane Burgoyne who is the 2011 Commodore @ North Cape. He expressed their very strong interest in hosting the Highlander Nationals in 2013 at their club. It’s nice to be welcome isn’t it? The volunteers manning the booth from Thursday thru Sunday were Gary & Elaine Steinbach, Doug & Cindy Fisher, and I was assisted by my daughters Ellie and Daisy. Skip Dieball and Nick Turney spent a lot of time on the booth supporting the class as well, and used the rig to demonstrate sail shapes and how to make changes that work.
Skip Dieball and his father, Denny have purchased 2001 from me, and we’ll have the pleasure of them both becoming a (more) regular feature on the Highlander circuit in 2012. We all felt that the show was very beneficial for the class and gave us good exposure to poten tial sailors. I think that a number of the visitors will now take the next step and visit the website or come to a regatta.
I’d like to thank Doug and Cindy for offering their boat & time, also to Gary and Elaine for their time , and finally to Tom Allen for his financial contribution to make it possible.

- Kevin Hughes Is Tops at Governor's Cup
Eagle Creek’s, Tyler Andrews and the Race Committee Band, gave us their rendition of “‘Eight Ways to Leave from Port.” All races were basically east to west, windward, leeward. Winds were moderate with plenty of energy to send boats from the starting line.
No one yelled all weekend. It was the largest grouping of long hairs on the sailing circuit. There might be a connection……maybe not, I forget.
Everyone should know that the Eagle Creek and Giest regattas are the best tune-ups for the Bluegrass and Pipers. It has been documented that the participants at the Governor’s Cup and the Thistle/Highlander event at Geist, place in the top five at Bluegrass and the Pipers 93% of the time………………. according to Dr. Bob’s abacus.
As always, Eagle Creek SC put on a dinner fare that was the “best ever;” nourishing, hydrating with live music wafting thru the late summer/early fall/leaves dropping, cool night air. Thank you, Eagle Creek.
(And thanks to event winner Kevin Hughes for his report above. Full results are available at “Highlander Regattas” under ‘results.’ Kevin won 4 of 8 races. Second was Doug Fisher who won 3. The only other race winner was our President, Jon McClean who flew into Indy to compete. Mojo (Careys) finished third overall. Tyler Andrews was our RC Chairman). (Now enjoy this additional Governor’s Cup coverage from Doug Fisher).
The first time we had sailed at Eagle Creek, was last year but arriving late (Cindy, my wife, says I'm excellent at showing up late to regattas), we found that our pigtail at the forestay had several broken strands so we thought it would be wise to pass up the regatta and head over to West Marine and then visit with local Fisher family in the Indy area.
This year we arrived late again, which my lovely, wonderful wife and awesome crew reminded me about again. This weekend was also a first for us since we decided, based on the weather forecast, to two-handle the highlander as a couple.
It was interesting sailing out of the channel, needing help getting away from the dock because my board was stuck in the mud; thanks Bryan Hollingsworth for his sage input or I might still be at the dock.
The races were interesting. Highlander guy, Tyler Andrews was working hard as RC chair in the light air conditions. The finishes were all over the place on the first day with Kevin Hughes in first place, Team Mojo in second with Fisher, Hollingsworth, McClean, Shayeson and Berkeley close behind.
The party was awesome and the dinner buffet was like no other I have seen at a sailing regatta, more like a family reunion in Jersey. The club had an awesome band that played both types of music, country and western, and they played Jamey Johnson songs so I grabbed Cindy and I embarrassed her I'm sure with all my dance moves.
The Sunday forecast and radar looked ugly but the rain held off, and yes we were late again to get out on the race course. Thanks all for waiting on us.
The wind was a little stronger and steadier and we moved up the standings eking out a second-place finish. We had a great time. Thanks Kenny Chapman for putting on an excellent regatta. We will be back again in 2012 to Eagle Creek and we will be two-handing the Highlander as a couple at many more highlander regattas.
September 17, 2011- Jamey and Tanya Carey Win Harvest Moon
At the Sep 10-11 competition at Atwood Lake, Jamey and Tanya Carey pictured here “shot the Moon” with three bullets. Gary and Elaine Steinbach placed second and John Bauer came in third, winning a tie breaker with Mike Shayeson.
John's crew was his cousin Charlotte Bauer and his step daughter Aly Northrop. Mike had Jason Japikse and Shon McCall as his weekend sailing team. Jamey Carey says he was quite proud of their three bullets but pointed to some competitive racing as second through fourth place were all within one point with scores of 10, 11, and 11.
Other high notes for the event included some excellent race committee work by Mark Redmond and his crew. Several participants commented on the Atwood YC bar as a great venue for Highlander parties for Friday and Saturday nights. And Class stalwart Gayle Kaufholz was back in action doing her great photography work that weekend providing the shot featured here, and many more for future magazine and web site use. (Our thanks to event reporter Harold Bauer and to Jamey Carey for input as well).

- Fleet 47 Has Arrived!
It’s official as of the HCIA annual meeting at 2011 Nationals, the Highlander folks at Greenhaven Sailing Club in Rhode Island are now Highlander Fleet 47. In the last few issues of The Highlander magazine you may have been following the group’s boat purchasing endeavors, headed up in great part by Jeff Curtin. They buy and recondition mid-priced boats and put new local owners into them.
In the past few weeks the group has just purchased #734 and #803 to do a “buff up” and to get these boats into the hands of new members for Fleet 47. The fleet is now about a half dozen strong, and, as a matter of fact, has been sending “Rhodie” boats to several regattas this summer and fall, including Nationals at Rock Hall; and plan to send at least one boat to Louisville for the Bluegrass, Oct 1-2.
They race in Little Narragansett Bay near Watch Hill, Rhode Island. Members come from mostly Rhode Island and Connecticut, but they have sailors from as far away as Maine come to join them. Jeff says they’d welcome you too if you ever get up that way. (Pictured here are: Fabio Whitehead, Jeff Curtin, and Mac Cooper).
Mark Steinmetz now serves as Fleet Captain, Jeff Curtin as Secretary, and Mac Cooper is Treasurer. Jeff reports that his daughter is helping them with the development of a fleet web site, coming soon. If you’d like to learn more about them, Jeff’s email is: pier65marina@gmail.com, or you can visit the club site at: http://greenhavensailing.com/.

- "Rock 'n Roll" Cruise Report
Cleveland’s Fleet 14 held the 2011 version of the 'Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Cruise' on Saturday, August 20. Although participation was limited by light wind and the threat of foul weather, all who participated had a wonderful time.
That was especially true because they were able to view 412’s coveted baby blue jib (circa 1969). Floppy and shapeless, that sail was the hit of the cruise – just wait until next year when the Merriams bring out the baby blue main as well.
Enjoying the afternoon in the accompanying photo were Steve, Charlie, and Linda Merriam on 412, in all her glory, with that baby blue beauty. Due to the weather, upon return, participants dined indoors at Edgewater Yacht Club to complete a relaxing and fun afternoon.
We plan to make this event bigger and better next year after Fleet 14 hosts the 2012 Highlander Nationals, July 21-26, 2012, so start planning now to join us for that championship event. (Our thanks to Fleet 14 reporter Steve Merriam).
August 28, 2011- Atwood's "Harvest Moon" Rising Soon
The 61st Annual Harvest Moon Regatta will be held Sep 9-11 at Atwood Yacht Club. This is a multi-class regatta includes Highlanders along with Thistles, Scots, Lasers and cruising boats. If you want racing, the Principle Race Officer, Highlander sailor Mark Redmond, will give you racing. Last year there were five races on Saturday and one more on Sunday morning. Even though this is a multi-class regatta there is no long wait between starts on the one design course as we run separate start and finish lines allowing races to start while other classes are finishing. (In photo, Norris Bourdow, Carl Berger, and Bill Price at past Harvest Moon).
Of course there is more to the regatta than just racing. Atwood Yacht Club has a beautiful full service dining room and a large bar with live music on Friday night. We even brew our on micro brews on the premise. Free Main Sail Ale will be available on Friday night along with an evening snack of hot dogs and pizza. A full breakfast buffet is included with registration for all competitors on Saturday and Sunday. Of course the big event is on Saturday after the racing when the world famous Harvest Moon hoers d’oeuvre and cocktail party happens. There is so much food provided that you won’t want dinner.
Atwood can provide great and often times challenging sailing and we will work hard to give you the best sailing regatta possible. On shore no regatta can beat the food, drink and fun that happen at the Harvest Moon, which is why it is still going strong after sixty one years. This year there is no conflicting Highlander regatta so please make the trip to Dellroy, OH. You won’t be disappointed. Contact Mark Redmond (mredmond929@gmail.com / 410-991-1660) or Atwood Yacht Club at www.atwoodyc.com.

- Harold Bauer Gets Checkered Flag at Hoover
What a great experience at Hoover in Columbus, Ohio this past weekend! The start of the all new Grand Prix series saw four former national champions on hand mixing it up over the two-day, four-race series.
Brothers John and Steve Bauer and Steve's wife Gillian sailed #925 "Herc" to a fifth place overall finish. Mike Shayeson with crew Jason and Katie sailed #2007 to a fourth place.
Making another appearance in the Highlander was Mike Perakis who, with crew Rob and Joyce Spring, sailed Aunt Ruby #1959 to a third place finish.
The competition all weekend was so tight, the regatta came down to a tie for first with the Scrimshaw crew of Harold and Stefanie Bauer winning the tie breaker against Louisville’s Ed Spengeman and crew Justin Busbey and Ben France sailing #2002.
What a great way to kick off our new Grand Prix series. Yes, even you can participate. Follow the scoring here at our web site through next year’s Nationals. Stay tuned!
August 13, 2011- "Rock Cruise" Is This Coming Saturday
The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Cruise is on for this Saturday, August 20, 2011, so plan to join the members of Fleet 14 for this fun, non-competitive social sailing event.
The plan at 11a.m. on Saturday is to launch our Highlanders and yours from two sites, Whiskey Island Marina and Edgewater Yacht Club. All boats will be filled with family, friends and the picnic lunches that you provide and bring along. You can opt to sail inside the protected area of the Cleveland breakwall or, if you choose, on the open waters of Lake Erie.
Our initial destination is a comfortable recessed inlet between the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Museum and the Great Lakes Science Center. After docking or rafting off of each other’s Highlanders at the Hall of Fame basin, the choices are limited only by desires and imaginations. Enjoying a picnic lunch and socializing on the nearby grassy area is one option.
It’s not too late to join us. Contacts are Chuck and Jacci Vandevender 440-835-3023 and vanprty@aol.com. (From Fleet 14 reporter Chuck Vandevender).

- New Grand Prix Series Revs Up!
The new Highlander Grand Prix racing series starts this coming weekend at the Hoover Fling, Aug 13/14 in Westerville, Ohio.
This new annual series, with its own trophy, will run from the 2011 Hoover Fling through the 2012 Highlander Nationals. All regattas in that time period, will fall into three groups and participants will be scored on their best scores for a designated number of races in each of those groups.
The concept was developed by Indy Highlander sailor Jason Hubbard (photo: center). Complete scoring details are just a click away on the home page under Grand Prix Series.
Hoover Sailing Club is convenient to I-71 and I-170 with easy boat launching on their ample ramp. The clubhouse has a great view of on-the-water activities and camping on the grounds is free. The regatta will be a low cost way to ‘get “your” motor running’ in this unique new racing series format.
August 4, 2011- Lake Norman Sailing Camp 2011
From Lake Norman Highlander stalwart, Doreen Gibbon, we received an extensive email regarding their annual summer sailing camp. That session had all the normal features of this type of educational opportunity for the local youth, but Doreen took the time to obtain a group photo and to make some other observations about the value and importance of these kinds of events. Here’s a little of what she had to say.
Once again Lake Norman Yacht Club’s annual summer camp became a reality. With around 100 children and nearly as many adults we were ready for anything the fates would fling at us.
During lunch one day I suggested that it would be fun to get a photograph of all those present who are or were past, present or future Highlanders. It was duly announced for all the children who were sons/daughters or grand children of Highlanders to assemble at the flag pole for a ‘photo op.’ I was expecting about 10 children to show up. Then someone said, “Can the adults come too?”
Some of our members were missing at that time, but you will probably recognize some of our past HCIA Nationals competitors, including: Peter Dolby, Peter’s daughters Sarah and Josey with their children; Dick Freund was not around at the time but his daughter Johanna and grandchildren WERE there; John and Doreen Gibbon and their three grandchildren; Jon Alix and wife Kim with their daughter; and John and Paddy Wigney with their grandson. Also in the picture were the Bargers, Scot and Barbara Moncrief and Dr. Schumacher, plus a bunch of children who I’m afraid I don’t know to whom they belong.
The future of the Highlander class is being trained and with all these young, enthusiastic sailors coming up we look forward to many more years of seeing that dancing Scotsman on many lakes. One of those will be Allen Crosby, the Gibbon’s Grandson, who will be skippering in his first Nationals this year.
Our thanks to Doreen Gibbon for this Lake Norman update, to Doug Collings for shooting the photo, and we must mention that Allen Crosby and his crew won the Sail-a-Gair trophy (highest finishing first-time skipper) at HCIA 2011 nationals at Rock Hall, Maryland this past July.

- Skip Dieball the 2011 Highlander National Champion
Skip Dieball is the 2011 Highlander National Champion. Congratulations Skip for a great come from behind victory. He was followed very closely by John Bauer only 2 points behind and Barret Rhoads only 3 points behind. Wind conditions were the best all week on Wednesday for the final 3 races. Complete results will be posted on the Regatta Results page soon. The Master (reschedule from abandoned races Sunday due to weather), Women and Junior Series will be held today and posted later. Check back for a more complete update and watch the next issue of "The Highlander" for comprehensive coverage.
July 12, 2011- Fleet Building In South Carolina!
Your News and Events editor, Mike Feldhaus, got this communication from Bruce Busbey and it just seemed fitting to pretty much present it as it was delivered. There were a few follow-up email questions and those responses fit nicely too. So here you go with an update from the northwest corner of South Carolina.
Hi Mike, Happy 4th of July! Hope you are enjoying the day. I wanted to send you a couple of recent pictures from our new "fleet" at Lake Hartwell (near Clemson). Chris Kafsky (pictured at the helm) and I are the beginnings of the new fleet down here and currently race Portsmouth with the other guys.
We have a guy who has expressed some interest but we haven't had a chance to take him out sailing yet. I'm hoping once we do, that it will "complete the transaction" since the Highlander pretty much sells itself. We were also hoping that Dennis Kafsky (Chris' dad) would buy a Highlander and join, but his recent heart issues have put that on hold for now.
At Lake Hartwell we race, Portsmouth scoring, against Flying Scots, Lightnings, Buccaneers, Force 5's, MC Scows. Of course, the Highlander usually wins the races; however the corrected time makes it tough. But so far I think we're winning about 50% of the races on corrected time (and 100% on actual time).
We live in Greenville, SC. Chris Kafsky lives in Clarkesville, GA. Sailing/racing out of Lake Hartwell works out perfectly for both of us. We're each about 50 minutes away from the club so it works out much better relative to the Lake Norman drive time. I'm still a member up there too (as you know: great folks) but we now tend to use the Lake Hartwell club for those spur-of-the-moment outings. With our three girls, the 2-hour trip up to Lake Norman needs to be a fully planned affair. We’ll keep you posted on the progress.
July 8, 2011- Fleet 14 Weekly Regatta Update
We at Fleet 14 in Cleveland continue to “pack ‘em in” for two editions of weekly racing, on Sunday mornings and again on Wednesday nights, where after racing, intense critique and beer drinking rule. Both series run from Memorial Day through the end of September.
This report and photo come from action on Wednesday night, June 29, when we had two, ten-boat races, with the first race’s top three finishers being: 1st Jim Mylett, 2nd Steve Merriam, and 3rd Gary Vinicky. In the second race the top three were: Steve Merriam, Jim Mylett, and Jonathan Smith.
It was really great for us to have two newer racers in the mix; Chris Chillemi in #977 and Tim Cline in #522, and both raced very well in both contests.
After the boats are put away we adjourn to either the bar and grill at Whiskey Island (formerly known as the Sunset Grille), or folks migrate over to the patio area of Edgewater Yacht Club (EWYC), where several of the racers are pictured in the photo provided.
We talk about the harrowing events and dastardly wind shifts of the evening’s races, about boats and rigging, and catch up on each other’s family and non-sailing lives. There is great camaraderie and everyone is always willing to help each with boat and racing problems and we all keep up with each other’s lives outside of racing.
The following weekend we had a great turnout of boats…………but the wind didn’t show up.
(Our thanks to Fleet 14 reporter Steve Merriam).
July 6, 2011- Pymatuning Regatta Update
Pymatuning Yacht Club near Jamestown, PA hosted its annual July 4th Invitational Regatta. Four Highlanders competed in this multi-class event that also featured three Fireballs, 11 Lightnings, seven J-22’s, and 40 Thistles. It was another awesome weekend for sailing at that club which, you may remember, hosted our 2010 Highlander Nationals last year.
After morning thunderstorms cleared out, racing finally got underway around 2 p.m. with two races sailed in 5-7 mph breeze. As always, the Friday and Saturday night parties were unbelievable and as always it was just an all around fantastic regatta. We always have a lot of fun there, and the Pymatuning folks love the Highlanders. They would like to get more of us to come to their July 4 regatta, and mentioned that several times; and also said they would welcome the opportunity to host Highlander Nationals sometime again.
In this two-race series, Harold Bauer won with two firsts and two points, followed by Rick Myers, Casey Petz, and Dan Hopkins who all tied with six, but with the tie breaker, finished in the order listed here.
It was also a great weekend to welcome aboard to the Highlander world, Casey and Lauren Petz along with their friends Lee Shuckerow and Anissa Noakes. Casey, Lee, and Anissa sailed while Lauren held down the position of shore crew. Casey and Lauren purchased #851 from John Emmerich in Louisville, just two months ago. (In photo: Lauren and Casey Petz, and Anissa Noakes, and Lee Shuckerow).
Casey and his father sailed keel boats in the Detroit area before making the move to Highlanders. The boat has a few bugs that need to be worked out, but Casey will easily resolve those issues. This was their first regatta in the Highlander with Casey as skipper. There’s no doubt that we’ll see this team out on the circuit in the near future.
(Our thanks to Highlander reporter Harold Bauer for this update).
July 1, 2011- Spengeman/Shayeson Take 2011 Pow Wow
The Indian Lake Pow Wow almost didn’t happen for Mike Shayeson (white cap) and me. We both were short on crew and weren’t sure whether we would have a team to take to the event.
Luckily, a couple of weekends prior at Cowan’s 50th anniversary Mad Plaid, Mike and I made an agreement to sail together. If I brought the boat and drove, he would bring the crew.
We had talked about a third, but as luck would have it we ended up only two manning it. His 165 ‘ish pounds and my whopping 155 made us light even for two-man standards.
Luckily we were able to hold on tight and play the shifts properly to take the win at the end of weekend. Thanks Mike!
(Our thanks to Ed Spengeman (red cap) for this report; complete regatta results are now posted).

- Condolences to the Carey Family
It is with great sadness that we must inform you of the recent passing of Jim Carey, father of Jamey Carey. After returning home to Florida after participating in the 50th anniversary Mad Plaid Regatta celebration June 11-12, Jim suffered a stroke. After some time in the hospital he appeared to be stabilizing but subsequently sustained a massive stroke and died earlier this week.
While all of us who knew Jim well will mourn his passing deeply, it is at least some measure of consolation to know that he was able to return to Cowan for that anniversary celebration and have a wonderful weekend visiting and sharing stories with his sailing family and many long time friends.
The Highlander Class wishes to express its sincere condolences to the entire Carey family.
If you would like to send a note to the family, you can do so at: Sue Carey, 104 Lake Drive, Fruitland/Crescent City, Florida, 32112.

- Cleveland Rehab #635 Moving Along
New owner of Highlander #635, Rob Wilber of the Cleveland area, is just about to wrap up an extensive rehab of that boat, purchased around March of 2010 when his friend Clint Preslan lost #567 in a sideswipe accident on the highway.
Rob, his brother, Tim, and Clint bought #635 shortly thereafter, and have been whipping her back into shape. Rob did an extensive article on the project for The Highlander magazine, July issue. Here are a few excerpts we thought you’d enjoy.
(Highlander Fleet 14 in Cleveland is not only one of the largest one-design fleets we have been associated with, but by far one of the nicest. Gary Vinicky, a very well known and respected Highlander sailor, took us under his wing and offered to help with anything and everything we needed to make #635 seaworthy again, and we happily accepted. After meeting the rest of the fleet, we got some pointers and figured out how to step the rig.
All of the deck ware was outdated. There were even composite winches mounted for the jib sheets. The wooden boom was warped into a smirk. All of the blocks and running rigging clearly had sat motionless for years. But, she still was a boat. We launched her, to check for leaks: all dry.
The 2010 season was coming to a close at this point, so we packed #635 back up and drove her to my parent's garage in Avon Lake. At a 45 degree angle, she took up the entirety of the space, leaving both cars parked in the driveway. Our folks made a very generous offer, allowing the boat to stay there through the Cleveland winter, which as many of you know, can be from November through July).
By now we hope that Rob, Tim, and Clint have been out on Lake Erie with Fleet 14. If not we hope they will be soon. Read all about the rehab in the July issue.
Don’t get The Highlander magazine? Join the Class and you will. Click on “contact us.” And thanks for your support of sailing and the Highlander, “The Original One Design Sportboat.”
This just in: Rob says they hope to have the boat ready to sail in Cleveland club racing by about the first week of July.
June 23, 2011- Don't Lose Your Shirt! Nationals Update.
Well, maybe the headline should read, “Don’t forget to order your shirt.” And the reason this is being brought up is that we don’t want anyone to arrive at Nationals without having “pre-ordered” their shirts for family and crew, because we will have few if any surplus shirts at Rock Hall. So, please do, pre order.
Also, no meal orders will be accepted at the Nationals Regatta. Due to local catering requirements, they too must be ‘pre-ordered’ prior to your arrival. If you haven’t completed your registration, please do so soon. And by all means please be sure to pre-order your shirts and your meals.
Finally, Nationals coordinators report they may be in need of an additional volunteer or two for a short stint, especially on Saturday or Sunday morning. If you can pitch in, even for just an hour or two, your help would be greatly appreciated. If you think you can help out please contact Erin Spengeman at redsailor876@hotmail.com. (In photo above, 2010 Nationals, volunteer worker bees, Lissa and John Bauer).
So join us at Rock Hall for Highlander Nationals. For a web site registration form; click on Regattas, then schedule, and then Highlander Nationals. You can also use the form on page 14 of the July issue of The Highlander. Register soon and, yep, “pre order” those shirts and meals.
June 21, 2011- Berlin Invitational Wrap-up Recap!
It was ‘one of those weekends’ at the Berlin Yacht Club as the annual invitational regatta hosted 11 Highlanders from all over Ohio and Kentucky, and as far away as New Jersey.
It was too bad that the wind didn't cooperate; but the weather couldn't spoil this annual event that is known for its great food and entertainment. Following a day of sailing in light to non-existent breezes, all in attendance were treated to a fantastic cocktail party with live entertainment and dinner Saturday evening.
Sunday proved no better as the wind just wouldn't come through. But Mike Shayeson in his new boat Go Mo-Betta, along with crew, Jason Japikse (in photo) were able to haul the hardware home from this one-race regatta. Complete regatta results are now available at Highlander Regattas, just click results and go to Berlin.
Mike said he is looking forward to seeing everyone at the Pow Wow this coming weekend at Indian Lake where the wind will hopefully be Mo-Betta.
Also, don't forget Pymatuning and their annual Independence Day Regatta on July 2nd and 3rd. If it's anything like the 2010 Highlander Nationals, you know it is sure to be a hit.
For more details on either event just click on Highlander Regattas and then schedule, and then click the specific event for contact information.
(We would like to thank Berlin stalwart Harold Bauer for this initial wrap-up report. We’re expecting a more detailed treatment from Mike Shayeson in coming days).

- Fleet 14 Update;Season Off and Running!
Fleet 14, located at Edgewater Yacht Club and Whiskey Island Marina in Cleveland, Ohio, got the sailing season going on Memorial Day with three races in fluky air - but man did it feel good to be racing again! Races have proceeded on Wednesdays and Sundays.
With sixteen boats registered to race, including five first-timers, Fleet 14 looks forward to an exciting season. The new skippers are Paul Kuebler (397), Tim Cline (522), Rob Wilber (635), Brian Luntz (920), and Chris Chillemi (977). We also have a host of new crew, some of whom are family and friends of the new boat owners, and others are recruits identified when they visited our Highlander display this past January at the Cleveland Boat Show.
In addition to our now famous after-race gatherings, the Fleet is planning a revitalized Rock ‘N Roll Hall of Fame Cruise on Saturday, August 20, 2011. Chuck and Jacci Vandevender are coordinating this event which will include a fleet pleasure sail over to the basin by the Hall with some Supreme Picnicing, possibly followed by some of that group heading off to the Cleveland Indians baseball game. (Class members: check details in a full story in The Highlander magazine July issue).
Out-of-towners are welcome to attend the event and stay for Sunday club racing the next day. For more details contact Chuck or Jacki Vandevender at: vanprty@aol.com.

June 14, 2011- 50th Annual Mad Plaid Is History
The 50th Annual Mad Plaid Regatta held by Fleet 4 of Cowan Lake Sailing Association is complete and wow, what a great success. HCIA members came through in a big way to support this special milestone for Fleet 4. Lots of effort by many means from many people went into spreading the word, pleading and cajoling to get the Highlander family to show support with their attendance. And did they ever come through. Twenty-four boats were on the starting line Saturday for the first time in a very long time including all three brand new Allen built Highlanders together for the first time. Skippers, crews and families from that many boats make for great times off the water as well. In addition to two local boats crewed by other skippers from non-Highlander Cowan fleets, we even had Highlander folks show up just to be part of the celebration and see old friends. Jamey Carey’s father, Jim Carey, who hasn’t been on a Highlander since 1988, road his 400cc Yamaha scooter all the way from Florida just for this occasion.
Highlander Fleet 4 members wish to extend their appreciation to all those went to the effort to join us and help make this unique milestone so special.
Top five trophies go to: 1st Place - John Bauer in 999 with 18 points, 2nd Place - Bruce Busbey in 2007 with 26 points, 3rd Place – Jim Taylor in 958 with 31 points, 4th Place – Ed Spengeman in 2002 with 33 points, 5th Place – Bruce Kitchen in 906 with 38 points.
See 2011 Mad Plaid Photos & Videos and a complete article in the next issue of "The Highlander."
June 9, 2011- HCIA Website Assessment
“So, how is this new Highlander web site going?” you might ask. Well, according to Google Analytics, our average weekly visits have risen 15% from 258 in the first four weeks to 296 in the last four. Page views have risen 10% from 1,248 average weekly to 1,377 average weekly.
About half the visitors to the site are new vs. returning. Other statistics like visitor loyalty, length of visit and bounce rate are also encouraging.
We’re on the right track. However, web sites need a constant source of fresh and unique content to keep these trends continuing in the right direction. That’s where YOU Highlander class members come in. You have a great tool to help promote your fleets and events.
Have you provided content for your fleet page? Have you provided content for your regatta page? I’m not talking about NOR’s and SI’s, but rather a quick, engaging answer to Why should someone want to consider becoming a Highlander sailor in your fleet or why should a Highlander sailor come to your regatta?
(The above is an excerpt from a magazine article by Boyd Barnwell in the July issue of "The Highlander." Don’t get that publication? Join the Class and you will).
May 19, 2011- Carey Takes Mayor's Cup
The Mayor's Cup at Eagle Creek in Indianapolis was completed May 14 & 15, and the full box scores are posted in the regatta results section. The Mayor's Cup is a multi-class event and per usual provided lots of action, both on the water and on shore with a great dinner and party.
Eagle Creek Sailing Club put two local Highlanders on the starting line, and six die-hard travelers made the trailer trip in spite of gloomy weather forecasts. The traveling set included two boats from Ohio, three from Kentucky, and Joe Volkert, driving all the way up from Florida. Joe will be ‘staying up north’ for the next few weeks and rumor has it that he is bringing the entire Volkert clan to the 50th anniversary Mad Plaid at Cowan Lake, June 11/12.
The ECSC Mayor's Cup was the second Highlander regatta of the year, and the first two finishers were the same as at the earlier Midwinters this April, with two traveling Cowan Lake teams once again finishing first and second. Team Mojo (Jamey & Tanya Carey) sailing this weekend with Tyler Andrews (photo above) picked up the regatta victory with fellow CLSA "road warriors" Mike Shayeson and Jason Japikse in a close second.Finishing just two points behind Mike was local sailor Jason Hubbard and his Mad Cow team, with two Kentucky boats rounding out the top five. Justin Busbey sailed with the Spengeman team for a fourth place finish with the Hollingsworth's Blind Hog crew earning fifth overall. Look for full coverage in the July edition of "The Highlander." (Our thanks to Jamey Carey for this report).
May 15, 2011- Gas Up Now at 2011 Pow Wow
Indian Lake’s Fleet 17 has been busy tidying up final details of this years 100th annual Pow Wow Regatta (okay, that might be an exaggeration), but nevertheless, we want you to join us in Russells Point, Ohio on June 25/26 for a great weekend or racing and camaraderie.
The usual ‘refreshments and dogs’ will be available Friday evening, with the big ‘super’ meal set for Saturday evening preceded by cocktails and yummies. We’ll have lunches and continental breakfasts available on Saturday and Sunday. (Photo above from 2010 Pow Wow action).
Complete specifics will soon be available in our NOR to be posted on this site (Highlander Regattas), but racing will commence about 1 p.m. on Saturday and again at around 9:30 a.m. on Sunday. Free camping is available on club grounds for tents and regular vans. The Comfort Inn, Bellefontaine, is just 15 minutes away. You can also contact Norris Bourdow at 937 470-4286 or nbourdow1@sbcglobal.net.
New this year, in light of prices at the pump, Fleet 17 will be giving away a $50 gas card, at random, to one lucky regatta traveler from out of town. Yes, we too, know that travel isn’t cheap, so we thought this might provide a little extra incentive for you to make the trip. (By Fleet 17 reporter, Norris Bourdow).
May 12, 2011- Louisville Sailing Club Ready to Dig Out
Fleet 37, Highlander crew regular, Jim Wilhelm, reports that the Louisville Sailing Club has a lot of work ahead as it prepares for the summer sailing season.
The Ohio River has been receding for the past two weeks. Today’s, May 11 forecast, was for the river level to be just a half foot above normal pool. However, that forecast has once again been changed to rise a couple more feet by the weekend.
This year has created three rive crests that rank in the top one hundred since records have been kept. On April 27th the river was at 19 feet above the normal (12.5) pool, ranking as the twenty-second worst flood. Other crests this year were at 26.63 feet on March 12 (46th worst), and 23.63 feet on April 15 (77th worst).
In the lower level of the clubhouse, the flood water rose about a foot and a half. As mentioned in an earlier post, storms and wind damaged the club roof and a few boats. (In the accompanying photo), you can see some of the flood mud covering the sidewalk leading to the stairway to the second floor.
Since then, mud has been cleared from the sidewalk leading to the clubhouse and grass is starting to grow up through the muck in the back field. Semi dried mud is still covering the road and the driveways to our lower dock level have about three feet of mud covering them.
Jim says the this Saturday’s scheduled club work party was postponed until May 21, at which time the water will be back to normal and they can bring in a bobcat, finish the clean up, lay down needed gravel as needed, and complete roof repairs.

May 7, 2011- Pot Luck Leftovers
As reported earlier, Pot Luck Regatta coordinator, Bryan Hollingsworth had to cancel the early May event because of high water. Bryan updates us that his decision just one week before the scheduled activities, turned out to be the right call.
He says high water had inundated at least three quarters of the campsite area. On top of that, had the area sustained a lake level rise of just another six inches, the Pot Luck fire pit would have been out of commission and that would have been a crusher.
Bryan says in some circumstances lake authorities would have allowed some of the surplus water out the flood gates, but the Corps of Engineers was monitoring the already swollen Ohio River and would not allow a draw down of Cave Run.
Bryan says he’s received several requests to re-schedule the Pot Luck in the fall. He’s now considering that and in coming weeks, will use this forum to alert us about that decision
May 6, 2011- Fleet 17: Indian Lake Update
With the sailing season upon us, several Fleet 17 members helped in getting the club opened and running for the season. There have been many improvements made in the last year.
Our Fleet Captain, Bill Albers, has worked tirelessly through the winter of 09/10, and all of last season engineering and performing many projects, including: a complete renovation of the inside of the main clubhouse; a new and restructured roof on the bathhouse; complete renovation of all bathrooms; removal of many "large" and dangerous trees; and supervising the replacement of new sewer/water lines tunneled under the lagoon some 800ft to the city service; and many other smaller projects around the club.
In the spring of last year, yours truly, was able to secure the purchase of a 'new' committee boat and motor to replace one that been in service since the "ark." This one actually floats on a regular basis and has a dependable motor to get our on-the-water jobs done expeditiously, safely, and in comfort.
We will be holding a fleet meeting very soon to lock in details for our upcoming, umpteenth annual Pow Wow regatta, set this year for June 25/26, so be sure to get the Pow Wow on your calendar. See further regatta information in coming days on this site. (By Fleet 17 reporter, Norris Bourdow).
May 4, 2011- Fleet 12 Ready To Roll
The sailing season at Berlin is finally here! On Saturday, April 30, we had our annual clubhouse opening and dock installation party. Even though the water is high as it is at most other flood control lakes in the country, all docks are in the water and ready for a full summer of sailing at Berlin Yacht Club.
We’d had a rigging and tuning seminar scheduled earlier but that was called off because of the high-water delay of several other chores that needed completion. After the clubhouse got opened up and the docks were in the water, the Highlander fleet started working on getting boats set up for the season. (Al Chrusciel in photo tweaking #1004).
Don't forget the BYC Annual Invitational Regatta is only about 7 weeks away. Make sure to save the dates of June 17-19. For complete travel and pricing information on this site, go to Highlander regatta section and click Berlin Invitational. We hope you’ll join us. It's sure to be a good time. (By Berlin Highlander Fleet Co-Captain, Harold Bauer).
May 2, 2011- Pot Luck Regatta Washed Out!
Pot Luck Regatta planner Bryan Hollingsworth had the unfortunate task to declare the 2011 Pot Luck Regatta a "wash out" due to high water on Cave Run Lake (parking lot photo from 2010 event).
Bryan has contacted all of those that he thought were coming, but we'd like you to pass the word along as well, to any in your local fleet who you think might have been planning to attend.
We'll have more details and a high water photo, perhaps, in a few days.
Again, please pass the word along that the 2011 Pot Luck has been cancelled.
April 29, 2011- Fleet 14 Welcomes Lake Erie Thaw!
Fleet 14 continues to meet throughout the pre-summer weeks in preparation for the upcoming race season. At recent meetings we have welcomed prospective boat owners and crew who expressed interest in Highlander sailing at the Cleveland Boat Show Highlander display. Further, we have discussed plans for our mid-May sailing seminar and crew training session with North Sails.
Meanwhile, co-fleet captain Gary Vinicky has been working with the management of Whiskey Island Marina to better organize the dry sail area at that facility. Gary is also spearheading a work team to repair a launch donated to our fleet to be used as a safety boat.
Co-fleet captain Steve Merriam has been working with Edgewater Yacht Club’s race committee on a schedule for Highlander skippers to fulfill their season race committee duty obligations.
On May 4, Edgewater is throwing a free Race Program/Meet and Greet event open to all race program participants.
Now that the ice is gone from Lake Erie, we are all catching the sailing fever! (Compiled by Fleet 14 Co-Captains Steve Merriam and Gary Vinicky).
April 26, 2011- Dicey Weather at Louisville
Bill Timmer, local Highlander fleet captain, reported that Louisville Sailing Club sustained some damage from an April 19 storm that knocked out local power lines to the club, took about a third of the shingles off the clubhouse roof, knocked out a few tree tops, and caused damage to a few boats; worst hit among them the Duerr family Highlander (in photo).
Jim Wilhelm and Bill were out the next day doing temporary tarp placement on the roof and taking a few photos. The power was restored, but river levels were back up, at or above, the top of the hoist. Check N&E post of March 22.
In the days that followed several more inches of rain have fallen and access to the club was limited and at times cut off. A small LSC crew made their way in and prepared the lower level for flood water entry, assuming river flood level predictions hold true. If water level forecasts are correct, two to four feet might cover the ground floor, but no water is expected in the, "finished" upper level of the clubhouse.
Hopefully, soon, the weather will get calm again, and the river pool will drop back to summer levels. LSC has been planning to increase the concrete portion of the lower dock this year. That’s still in the planning, but they’ll have a little tree damage and river mud removal before that begins. Keep your fingers crossed for dryer weather.
April 22, 2011- 2011 Midwinters Report
By Jamey Carey
Forecasted severe weather for the Carolinas limited participation in the 2011 HCIA Midwinters to just 14 boats. On Friday, April 15, Mother Nature provided an awesome practice day with comfortable temperatures and 12-18 mph winds all day. Unfortunately the predicted severe weather showed up late that night in the form of high winds and heavy rain, and lasted through most of Saturday morning. During one particularly strong mid-morning storm the rainfall reduced visibility to zero. After the weather moved through it was a pleasant, but very breezy afternoon.
With wind in the 15-25 mph range, gusting into the mid thirties, the fleet went into the typical postponement "holding pattern." One activity that developed during this downtime was an inspection of the two Lake Norman "loaner boats", which progressed into a partial refitting of #741 to prepare her for racing. This project started with Fleet 27 members, but later included many visitors who contributed advice as well as miscellaneous hardware to replace missing parts. At 2 p.m. the Race Committee wisely abandoned the day’s racing and, in an effort to complete three races for this event, announced an expanded schedule for Sunday's racing.
Sunday was a gorgeous day with light to medium, if somewhat shifty, wind conditions. The race committee's persistence and hard work provided three competitive races. Two brand new Tom Allen boats, 2006 and 2007, made their racing debuts. While there was "some assembly required," these craft immediately proved to be competitive racing machines as both finished in the top three positions.
TEAM MOJO, Jamey and Tanya Carey, were joined this weekend by Ernie Dieball, and they squeaked out the regatta victory with scores of 2-1-1. They were followed closely by Mike Shayeson, Jason Japikse and Shon McCall in Mike's new 2006 posting scores of 3-3-3. Bruce Busbey's all-family team (in photo) in their new 2007 earned third place in PEQUOD’s maiden voyage. Rob Spring's team was sailing Mother Ocean for this event and finished 4th, with local favorite Dick Doyne and company rounding out the top five finishers. Please see the regatta results for complete scores.
The teams of Allen Crosby and Jeff Curtin deserve special recognition. Allen and his all teenage crew discovered that the refit to 741 was not quite complete when they lost their rudder halfway through the last race. Undaunted, they completed the race steering with a paddle. In spite of the questionable weather forecast, Jeff Curtin and his crew drove over 13 hours from Rhode Island to finish in 8th place.
April 5, 2011- Fleet 14 Planning for Active 2011
Co-fleet captains at Edgewater Yacht Club/Whiskey Island Marina, Steve Merriam and Gary Vinicky, report that Fleet 14 has had a busy 2010, a very productive winter season, and plans are already rolling along in 2011.
In their Wednesday night racing series and their Sunday competition last season, they had some 13 boats participating. The top five in the Wednesday series were, 1-5: Jonathan Smith, Jim Mylett, Gary Vinicky, Reid Vail, and Steve Merriam. The Sunday series top five, 1-5, were: Gary Vinicky, Jonathan Smith, Chuck Smith, Rick Robertson, and Joe Begany.
As you can see in the April issue of “The Highlander” our quarterly publication, Fleet 14 had a successful exhibit at the Cleveland Boat Show this past January. Local leaders say this effort has paid hefty dividends to the class, and to the local fleet as evidenced by the activity level in recent seasons.
This year the group plans on having as many at 15 boats on the line for weekly racing. A mid-May sailing seminar and crew training session with North Sails is on their schedule. And this August 20, they’re also planning to reprise the Highlander Rock ‘n Roll Cruise (details in the weeks ahead).
March 29, 2011- Fleet 37 Update
As we dust off the boat covers, local fleet captain, Bill Timmer, reports that Louisville Sailing Club's Highlander Fleet #37 sailing season for 2010 was hampered by the weather, all kinds of it. The lack of wind, excessive heat, and just rotten weather all around limited the number of races for the season. That resulted in the total number of races held at about 45, about half the normal average.
The trophies for first and second place Sunday Highlander series were not decided until the last day of racing. In that final competition Jim McBee, with his long-time crew Jim Wilhelm and Martha Strobel, aced out Paul Terrien who was skippering his boat (co-owned with Brent Deaves who missed the last day with back issues). So, Jim McBee finished the season in first place, Paul Terrien and Brent Deaves placed second, and the third spot went to Bill Timmer. (photo: Jim Wilhelm and Jim McBee at the helm).
While the season winner gets his name engraved on the permanent trophy on display in the Louisville clubhouse, and an additional trophy is awarded at the annual banquet; several years ago two additional ‘traveling trophies’ were created by the late Bob Bauer, charter member of LSC. First and second place skippers get to keep them for a year, until the next year’s top two are determined.
Bob, who passed away last year, will always be remembered for his love of sailing and his support of the Louisville Sailing Club. His trophies are truly works of art.
The 2011 season looks to be one of the most active racing seasons in many years. Bill predicts at least 100 races with eight to ten boats meeting qualification levels. All it will take is wind and a strong commitment from local fleet members.
March 24, 2011- Fleet 12 Makes Plans at Kick-off Meeting
Berlin Yacht Club’s Highlander Fleet 12 held its annual ‘spring kick-off party and pot luck dinner’ on March 19 at the home of Harold and Stefanie Bauer. A great crowd turned out as evidenced by the accompanying photo.
Along with a season of fun, racing, and social activities, plans for this summer include a rigging and tuning day at their club in late April to help everyone get their boats ready for the sailing season. They also have plans to hold a capsize drill, but will opt to hold that event a little later into the season after things warm up a tad.
March 22, 2011- Water Receding at Louisville Sailing Club
While there'll be plenty of debris for club members to deal with at the Louisville Sailing Club (LSC) 're-commissioning' work party in the coming weeks, Fleet #37's Jim Wilhelm reports that March flood waters did not rise enough to enter the clubhouse.
Jim provided the accompanying photo, taken March 20,11, as the river was on its way back down. High water did make its way up both drive ramps to the upper level of the club grounds, and at various points, covered the road coming in to club property.
There will be hours of extra clean up work coming soon, but overall, LSC dodged a bullet.
March 11, 2011- High Water Update, Louisvlle
Thanks to Jim Wilhelm, Fleet 37 Highlander crew regular, also handy with a camera, for providing updated shots of the Ohio River level at Louisville Sailing Club (these shot around 3 p.m. March 10).
If you compare this Thursday shot from the clubhouse sidewalk/stairs to LSC’s lower dock, with the shot provided in N&E post on Tuesday, March 8, you’ll notice the hoist is missing. It’s under water.
The river was expected to continue rising but only a little. As to water entry into the lower level of the clubhouse; as this report was put together, it was a toss up.
March 11, 2011- Louisville High Water, Second View
In the second shot, taken Thursday, March 10, by Jim Wilhelm, the view is from the ‘downstream’ back side of the LSC clubhouse looking toward the river, over the corner of the new porch, in a north/northeasterly direction.
Across the river at left is Indiana. For those of you familiar with LSC, you may be able to distinguish the silhouette of Twelve Mile Island somewhat centered between the two porch posts.
Officials expect the river to crest in the next day or two.
March 9, 2011- Winking Lizard Update: Fleet 12
On the first Wednesday of each month, the Fleet 12 folks at Berlin Yacht Club have been having regular monthly gatherings at the Winking Lizard Tavern in Fairlawn near Akron, Ohio.
It's a great way to pass the cold winter months and stay up to date with what everyone is doing to beat the winter blahs. Our next fleet gathering will be on March 19th at the home of Harold and Stefanie Bauer for the annual pre-season planning meeting and pot luck dinner.
You can be sure that we'll be talking about the Annual Berlin Yacht Club Invitational Regatta scheduled for June 18/19. We hope everyone will save the dates!
March 8, 2011- High Water in Louisville
Here’s a shot from the top of the sidewalk out over our docking area at Louisville Sailing Club in early March. Yes, that’s the top of our hoist just above the Ohio River’s high water flow. We’re keeping our fingers crossed that there’s no significant damage.
This high water is not that unusual for early spring, and traditionally the hoist has weathered it well. Generally, the only real aftermath from the high water is debris, occasionally including large trees that have to be dealt with. But our members will have the club all ship shape for regular sailing in June, when the river level will be at normal pool, we hope.
Actually, the water level is well below entry into the clubhouse, and is not predicted to go much above the level pictured in this photo provided by LSC Highlander crew regular, Jim Wilhelm.
And for long range planning purposes, don’t forget; Fleet 39’s Bluegrass Regatta is all set for October 1st and 2nd. We hope to see you there.
March 1, 2011- For Immediate Release
“Highlander’s Rising”
The Highlander Class has launched a brand new updated website as the first step in HCIA’s long range strategic plan to grow Highlander sailing and improve the overall sailing and racing experience. The new site shows off HCIA’s new brand logo and provides many resources to members and sailors interested in the Highlander one-design class.
Designed by Gordon K. (Sandy) Douglass in June of 1950, the prototype was launched in the fall of 1951. The boat was designed to be a fast, stable and comfortable one design dinghy. A numbers of new boats are currently being built by the Allen Boat Company. This design truly lives up to the title as the “original one-design sport boat.”
The class association supports a number of fleets, a vibrant regatta circuit and growing attendance at its National Championship each year. Older hulls compete equally at regattas with boats built in 2010. This is a tribute to the longevity of the design and the quality of manufacture. New boats are due for delivery in 2011 to continue the resurgence the Highlander class is enjoying. Unlike many one-design dinghy racing boats, the Highlander Class is experiencing growth in membership and new boat builds.
To learn more about the boat, locate a fleet close to you, or just re-visit an old friend go to www.sailhighlander.org or contact class president Jon McClean. (pilot@sailhighlander.org) or 513 652 2465
February 18, 2011- Midwinters Firm: Coming up April 16/17 at Lake Norman
Lake Norman Highlanders in Fleet 27 have confirmed that regional sailing officials have cleared April 16/17 for their hosting of the Highlander Midwinters 2011. Sailors there say the NOR will soon be posted on the HCIA website, and along with a schedule of events will be posted on their own web site (click Fleet 27).
The photo provided here was from some Lake Norman sailing action from a few years back. We hope you’ll consider opening your 2011 Highlander season at the Midwinters.
February 18, 2011- Facelift Coming for "The Highlander" magazine
Our quarterly class publication will get a bit of a facelift for its next issue, come April 1. In concert with our board of directors, our new logo update, and the March 1 debut of our new website, class leaders felt like now was the time to freshen the look of our quarterly publication.
There’ll be a new permanent banner for the front page including the addition of the updated logo, and slight design changes.
Editor, Mike Feldhaus, (above) promises to keep the content as fresh and up-to-date as possible, and encourages all class members and Highlander supporters to submit articles, photos, and tid bits of all kinds: (mikefeldhaus@insightbb.com). Magazine issues are published in January, April, July, and October, and the deadline for material in each, is the 1st of the preceding month (December, March, June, and September).
Also over the coming months, we’ll be processing more archive editions of the magazine to be added to this web site. As Mike completes a year’s worth of conversions, he’ll submit to our webmaster and as they get posted a notice of their availability will be highlighted in this section of the website.
February 18, 2011- Check Those Bearings, Buddy!
The weather is turning, and so are our thoughts…….…to sailing. For some of us that may soon mean we’ll hit the regatta trail, and head out on the highway. While you’re cleaning up and tuning up your sailing rocket, don’t forget about your delivery craft; “your trailer.” There’s nothing so disappointing and frustrating, and potentially dangerous, as a trailer breakdown on the highway.
Be sure to check out the archived article by Harold Bauer on simple trailer tips and maintenance. Take them to heart and tune up your trailer ‘before’ heading out this spring.
That article can be found on page 10 of the April 08 issue of “The Highlander.” Check the website listings for “The Highlander” Newsletter.
February 14, 2011- Reduce Next Year's Tax Bite, Help HCIA at the Same Time
April 15th is almost here. Are you feeling the sting of your 2010 tax bill? Obviously one way to help offset that liabiity a little for next year is to upgrade your charitiable contributions. So if you're headed in that direction, why not consider a financial gift to Highlander Training and Development?
Donations to this 501 (c) (3) ‘are’ tax deductible and go toward providing training in sailing and racing, and the promotion of safety on the water. As in the case of Highlander Fleet 27 at Lake Norman, some local fleets are able to rehab and outfit older boats (as in this photo) with competitive sails and gear, making them available as “loaners” to accommodate newer sailors interested in learning more about sailing and Highlanders.
Contributions can be made in cash, boats, and/or boating equipment. Check out complete details elsewhere on this site at: HCIA Training & Development.
